NHBA Youth Foundation, Inc.
Upon their organization, the Directors of New Horizon Bass Anglers decided that their members should be giving back to the community. They decided to do this by teaching young people to fish rather than watching them sit on the couch playing video games or on the streets finding themselves getting into drugs. To this end, the members took it upon themselves to commit 50% of each tournament fee as a donation to the non-profit NHBA Youth Foundation.
The Foundation hosts two free Kids' Fishing Derbies each year at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, Virginia. The kids register online; show up at the lake with parents/guardians; catch, record, and release fish; and receive prizes depending on their catch. In addition, each kid receives a "Goody Bag" filled with fishing tackle to use with their family between Derbies.
We started holding these Derbies in 1991 and have held two Derbies each year ever since. Many of the kids that started fishing at our Derbies have come back over the years and assisted us in helping the incoming batch of kids. We have also experienced many parents bringing their kids to the Derbies and mentioning that they started fishing at our Derbies many years ago. We are actively looking for additional anglers who could donate time assisting the kids in catching fish.
Derbies are always held on the first Saturday in June and the third Saturday in July. Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
As the number of kids attending increased to beyond 300 with an equal or larger number of adults accompanying them, our costs have increased proportionally. As a result, we took on the task of running the Dale City Fishing Flea Market in February to better fund the Derbies. We are constantly on the lookout for donations in the form of fishing tackle, boats, fishing equipment or just plain money. All donations are fully tax exempt with verification furnished. If you can provide any donation, please contact: Rick Mrstik at [email protected]
